Richmond movers explain why the off-season can mean more open dates and how families can stay safe when moving in winter weather.
RICHMOND, VA, UNITED STATES, October 23, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — Most people picture moving season as summer, but plenty of Richmond-area families move between November and February. A new job that starts in January, a home sale that closes before year-end or a lease that ends on the 31st can all put a move in the middle of the holidays. Cavalier Moving, a moving company with locations in Richmond and Midlothian, is sharing winter moving tips to help families across the greater Richmond region plan a smoother move.
Why the off-season can work in your favor
Demand for moving services typically drops after the busy summer months. For customers, that often means more open dates, easier scheduling for weekday moves and, in many cases, more flexible pricing than in peak season. The exception is the last week of the month and the days around Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s, which still fill up quickly.
“Winter is one of the best-kept secrets in moving. Crews have more availability, and customers can usually get the exact date they want if they plan a few weeks ahead,” said Josh Wright, co-owner of Cavalier Moving.
Tips for moving during the holidays
Book early around holiday weeks: Dates near Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s go first. Reserve your move several weeks in advance and avoid the final days of the month when possible.
Watch the forecast and keep a backup plan: Richmond winters are usually mild, but ice and snow do happen. Check the forecast a few days out and ask your mover how weather delays are handled.
Clear and treat walkways: Shovel and salt sidewalks, steps and driveways at both homes before the crew arrives. Safe footing protects your movers and your belongings.
Protect floors and entryways: Wet, salty shoes can damage hardwood and carpet. Lay down floor runners or ask your movers to bring floor protection.
Pack cold-sensitive items with care: Electronics, houseplants, candles, paint and some liquids do not handle freezing temperatures well. Move these in your own car when you can.
Pack holiday decorations separately: Label ornaments and lights clearly and keep them apart from everyday items so unpacking is faster next year.
Set up utilities before move-in day: Make sure heat, electricity, water and internet are running at the new home before you arrive. Arriving to a cold house is the most common winter moving surprise.
Keep an essentials box close: Pack medications, chargers, toiletries, snacks, warm clothes and important documents in one box that travels with you.
Plan around school breaks: Many families use winter break to move so children can start the new semester in their new school without missing class.
“Moving in December or January takes a little more planning, but it doesn’t have to be stressful. We tell every customer the same thing: book early, watch the weather, and let us handle the heavy lifting,” said Rooke Crouch, co-owner of Cavalier Moving.
