Evidently, the leader in Clinical Data Intelligence, today announced that UnityPoint Health has selected the platform for deployment across the health system’s 18 regional hospitals throughout the Midwest. The platform helps UnityPoint Health clinicians synthesize relevant information across the longitudinal patient record, each finding linked to its source, so they can make clinical decisions with a more complete picture in view. The expansion follows a clinical evaluation in which the health system identified an average of four to five net-new quality-impacting conditions per admit note, highlighting previously undocumented patient complexity. Among surveyed clinicians, 93% reported satisfaction and 98% reported meaningful time savings, and adoption grew organically across service lines.
“Our patients move between hospitals across three states, and each one carries a lifetime of clinical history,” said Cate Ranheim, MD, Vice President of Quality and Clinical Effectiveness, UnityPoint Health. “We needed to give every care team, at every site, the ability to understand the full picture of each patient’s complexity.”
Surfacing Hidden Patient Complexity Across a Geographically Distributed Population
UnityPoint Health operates 18 hospitals serving metropolitan and rural communities across the Midwest. Many patient records include years of clinical history spread across Care Everywhere documents, scanned records, and notes from multiple care settings.
The challenge is particularly significant in geographically distributed health systems where patients often receive care from multiple organizations over time. After evaluating several approaches, UnityPoint Health selected Evidently’s Clinical Data Intelligence platform to help clinicians better understand patient complexity and support more accurate documentation.
Clinical Evaluation Demonstrated Measurable Results
Using Evidently’s Admit Note Silent Study methodology, UnityPoint Health identified an average of four to five net-new quality-impacting conditions per admit note for clinician review and projected a Case Mix Index increase of at least 0.06.
The results reinforced the health system’s decision to expand the platform and highlighted potential for more complete clinical context to support documentation and related quality and reimbursement processes.
“The results at UnityPoint Health reflect a challenge we see across health care,” said Kai Romero, MD, Head of Clinical Success, Evidently. “Every patient’s history holds context that shapes their care, and too often it’s buried within the medical record. When clinicians can see the full picture in real time, they can care for each patient with full context, and accurate documentation follows.”
Strong Clinician Adoption and Time Savings
When UnityPoint Health expanded access to emergency department physicians and hospitalists, the team closely monitored adoption. Rather than declining after an initial launch period, usage continued to grow without a mandate from leadership. The UnityPoint Health team developed an organic Experience Exchange program internally for clinicians to share what was working with one another, and that peer-to-peer learning carried usage across service lines.
“What stood out to me was seeing adoption continue to grow over time,” said Jon Senkler, DO, Regional Chief Medical Information Officer, UnityPoint Health – Des Moines. “That’s encouraging because sustained clinician use can be challenging with new technology.”
As one UnityPoint Health clinician put it: “It routinely shaves 60-plus minutes off my day-one rounding chart review. It is excellent at identifying why certain treatments were started.”
Among surveyed users, 93% reported being satisfied or very satisfied with the platform, and 98% reported meaningful time savings.
Expanding Across UnityPoint Health
UnityPoint Health is rolling out the platform system-wide, beginning with emergency department physicians and hospitalists. The expansion follows strong evaluation results, high clinician satisfaction, and increasing adoption across multiple specialties.
“UnityPoint Health evaluated the platform rigorously and saw meaningful engagement from clinicians across sites and specialties,” said Kalie Dove-Maguire, MD, President and Chief Product Officer, Evidently. “We see the same pattern consistently, across the health systems we work with: usage that grows over time instead of fading, because clinicians stay in control of every decision and get more time at the bedside. We’re honored to support their continued deployment of Clinical Data Intelligence across the health system.”
